The main reason that I have never been abroad is because I get bored too quickly - all that beaches stuff and having to pretend to be interested in stuff and places and museums and bollocks. I've only ever once visited a museum in my adult life - the Ashmolean - unbearably boring. School is to blame of course - it put me off Shakespeare and sport and young people and teachers and days out to "interesting" places.

School nearly put me off reading too - but our year was lucky in that the three books we had to read for O-Level were all much better than feared - Great Expectations, 1984, Lord Of The Flies - all books that I would still read today with pleasure.

So it was a huge surprise that (a) I recently found myself walking in thru the entrance to the Outdoor Museum just north of Chichester, and (b) that I really enjoyed it there. I really thought it'd be excrutiating - old jossers dressed up in smocks and holding scythes and telling us how they used to make string in 1066. But once I'd settled into the OAP rhythm of the place I adored it all.

Alarmingly, it is the first place that I have ever paid to enter at a concessionary over-60 rate. When we got the tickets we also got a picnic, and this too was wonderful. Another main reason why I have shied away from foreign travel, and even holidays in the UK, is that you always apparently have to find things to DO all the time - really boring things - and the only things I want to do are things I can do happily at home - read and make music and meddle in the garden.

But incredibly our holiday in Sussex was wonderful. There were a few things we did that didn't work out as planned - e.g. we planned a day out at Haslemere, bizarrely thinking that it was an interesting delightful town - but two minutes after arrival we realised that it's the equivalent of a New Foresting holidaymaker deciding on a day out in Millbrook.

Other things didn't go quite to plan. An evening meal at a restaurant that was unbearably pretentious and clearly not impressed that neither of us had been to public school. And I must say that the drivers in the Midhurst area are the worst in the country.

But when our holiday was over and I dropped off my girlfriend (who happens to live in Millbrook - fact!) and came back here to this restful empty house I was almost sad.
